When Blomkamp announces a new movie, everyone is in anticipation to find out what the man behind District 9 and Elysium has in mind. Today, hits theaters the movie "Chappie", which, as expected, is a future full of new technologies.
Sharlto Copley with, Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman in the cast, the film tells the story of a talented, special child and full of doubts.
Well, like other children, Chappie suffer the influence of those around you and you have to trust your heart to find her way in the world and shape its own personality.
Only Chappie is a bit different: he is a robot. It is the world's first with the ability to think and feel. Created by Deon engineer (Dev Patel), the robot ends up falling in wrong hands and grows under the care of bandits.
Focused more on comedy and action, "Chappie" has a number of turns, ranging from ethical issues to discussions on the problem of leaving security in the hands of robots. Vale advance that the film was very well executed and can enjoy a variety of ways. A work more than recommended for those who like technology.
Spoiler alert
Before continuing the criticism, it paused to make it clear that we will address many plot details in the development of this text. It is recommended to make the reading given after the movie, as some information presented herein may impair your experience in film. We warned.
A new footprint
O Neill Blomkamp director is known for his feature films - and his familiarity with the genre secured his name in the direction of Alien's next feature film - but the management style (and screenplay) seen so far was more focused on the seriousness and discussion of curious or even more controversial issues.
In "Chappie" we can give a new side of the filmmaker. As noted above, the great advantage of this movie is comedy. Well, who would have thought a movie about the future and robots could be funny? The laughs are very natural and the script induces us to win the favor of the protagonist who acts unexpectedly every new discovery.
Importantly, however, that this is not a work of slapstick comedy. What makes the funny movie is precisely the unusual situation with little menacing gangsters a clumsy robot and appropriate music and mannerisms that are more than a little unusual to our friend Chappie.
It is also worth to note that the film manages to balance the comedy with dramatic moments, we got to feel sorry for a machine, and stuffed action scenes complete with a giant robot a la Metal Gear. In fact, it is precisely in sequences watered adrenaline that the title can stand out, leaving little joke aside and showing the dangers of the future.
Intermediating the history of robots, we have a select group of actors (and even the musicians of Die Antwoord) that can sustain the plot without difficulties. Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman are very important here, perfectly playing good guy and bad guy, but the highlight is the same for South African artists rap-rave band that literally steals the show!
The supporting cast gives the feeling that this is a possible future where we still have governments with questionable decisions and thinking companies money above all else. The choice of South Africa as main stage comes in handy, since there are very favorable scenarios for the development of some key scenes in the plot.
Advanced technologies and consistent
Well, leaving the plot a little aside, it comment on an element that was of paramount importance to the construction of the film: the technology. This is a flawed point in many works that depict the future, as some creators have very avoadas ideas that do not convince the public or who simply are so far removed from reality.
Fortunately, Blomkamp with its precise feel, to create the script, chose to include credible solutions that enable the audience to embrace the plot hard. Although they spend in 2016, a very next year for some ideas, technologies presented are not so far from reality.
In theory, robotics police force presented in the film is not impossible to create even more because they are machines that do not have full autonomy. With a little effort, we could think of a very advanced cloud computing would help in the control of androids.
The same exaggeration of the film is the Chappie robot, which can develop the capacity to absurd intelligence. The film does not spend much time explaining how it all came about and how the news. Information is played on the screen and you just have to accept and follow the progress of the plot.
Are among many twists either absurd (as a backup zillions of terabytes that is stored on a flash drive), but for those who "buy" the idea of a robot with human consciousness, such details do not even bother.
"Chappie" is a film that proves the ability of Neill Blomkamp to work with different genres, without losing the thread in the technological issue of thing. Less moral lessons, more jokes, so is the new film from filmmaker who can entertain the audience. We recommend see in the movies.
